Remembering Your WOTY ~ Giveaway!

 Now that you have chosen your WOTY and it's forefront in your mind and your year is just proceeding along swimmingly accordingly, (cough, cough)... OR, maybe you are like me and the year is speeding by and you know you need to be reminded constantly of WHAT your WOTY is and WHY you chose it!?

There are so many good ways to remember your word of the year! I like to scour the web for quotes that speak to me pertaining to my word and then use them for my lockscreen and homescreen backgrounds on my phone. Currently I'm using these two respectively.

And this one sparks joy every time I glance at my Apple Watch.

I also am loving having my lightbox which sits above my pantry in the kitchen proclaim:

Q U I E T
💗
#WOTY

Last year I ordered myself a whimsical little copper plant tag from my creative friend, Priscilla Hibner. I loved it so much I ordered them for stocking stuffers for my mom and sisters this past Christmas! If you want to order one, contact Pris at (270) 590-4895. You won't regret it.

The possibilities are endless for ways to keep your WOTY front and center! Others ideas I've heard of are getting custom stickers cut, (you can sticker up your windows, mirrors, phone cover, insulated cup, etc.) getting a t-shirt or hoodie printed, or finding a worded mug.

This year, I've decided to frame quiet 2021 and hang it in my "new to me" home office that I've moved from my dressing room to a corner of our living room. I wanted something super classy, yet simple and minimalistic, so I chose the printable below from this Etsy shop!

Because I'm so excited about this wall art for my WOTY, I will buy an extra one to give away when I order mine! If you want to enter this drawing, you have to tell me your WOTY in the comments below! If you haven't chosen one, it's not too late! Since I love long comments, I'd also be delighted if you tell me why you chose your word and what you hope it does for you.

OK, comment away!
I will do the drawing on Wednesday, so you have until 12:00 midnight on Tuesday before the coach turns back into a pumpkin.

Welcome 2021 & WOTY 2021

 Happy New Year!

Now that it's January 19, I finally feel ready to embrace 2021! I always feel like I need a couple weeks between December 31 and January 1 to get prepped and rallied and revived and to get my lists, aspirations, and resolutions resolved!

But as the old quote goes, "Time and tide waits for no man."  That being said, I do have my WOTY chosen, and my 21 for 2021 list made. (I'll elaborate on this in a later post.)

Today I want to share my word of the year and the inspiration behind it.

I chose the beautiful, calming, scary word ~ QUIET.

This year I want to learn how to be quiet. I am talkative by nature, which I embrace, but sometimes, it would do me and everyone me around so much good if I could just be more quiet. I want to live the quote, "If you can't be kind, be quiet."

Another benefit of being quiet is to hear what other people have to say.

I also want to have a quiet heart, a quiet spirit; to not let the voices of turmoil scream loudly in my mind. So many times, I can't change a situation anyway. I want to just trust God and let quietness reign inside.

And last, but not least, I made a WOTY goal to prioritize actual, factual quietness! Instead of feeling obligated or giving in to FOMO if I'm not constantly listening to some amazing book, podcast, lecture etc., I want to just listen to my own quiet thoughts as much as possible. It's not dull to just think! I want to leave my phone and its noisiness at home when I walk down Garrett Road.

Did you choose a WOTY? If so, please let me know! This is my fourth year wotying and I love it! I try to get everyone around me to choose one too lol. Sorry, I'm so pushy! It just gives the year a bit of whimsy and somewhat of a goal/theme! The idea of a word or phrase of the year was sparked by my favorite author, Gretchen Rubin. I have all her books and listen to her podcast more than any other!

My past words were as follows:
2018 - Home
2020 - Balance
I guess I never did blog about Balance, (I'll blame it on Covid!) but it ended up being very much of a blessing for the unprecedented year of 2020.

So here's to choosing a WOTY and being QUIET in 2021!

A Planner, Please!

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail..

I NEED a planner!
Life without a planner feels pointless!
I just kind of float around, somewhere in la la land.
I didn't plan not to get a 2019 planner, but neither did I plan to get one before it was too late!

I've been busy, and I've made lists, but I haven't planned my "19 for 2019!"
(I definitely did not completely complete my "18 for 2018" but I do know I got way more of it done than had I not planned it! #anotherpost)

Rave reviews are being uttered about the Time Keeper Planner! By the people who planned ahead and ordered them before they were sold out! Argh.

Last year, I found an Eccolo planner at T.J. Maxx for only $9.99 that I loved! It had the best quotes, and instead of crossing things off, it had  these little bubbles to fill in "heavy and dark" just like achievements tests at school! lol

Image result for eccolo planner 2018

The year before, I splurged on a rad "Bando" planner. It was cool, but hardly worth the extra moolah at $32 plus shipping.

bando planner size comparison 2

This year, I'm looking so late that they are sadly picked over! Amidst the rumpled and crumpled ones left at the T.J. Maxx in Daphne, I found a smallish green Eccolo one that's a pleasing shade of green and says, "nevertheless, she persisted." Which I adore. So I purchased it. But, it isn't spiral-bound, and it's pretty small. So I haven't marred it yet. #floaton

Since a couple of my sisters have scored satisfactory planners at our local Walmart, I need to dash up there and check their stock!

Pursuing the perfect planner is proving to be quite a pain! I shall have to settle for something, and soon! Please tell me what planner you love, and why! Or if you even use one!
Maybe a year of floating would be more fun...

Lightbox LOVE

I love my lightbox.

I'm pleased as a pumpkin with what I just changed it to! It now says...

Pumpkin Quotes and Puns Give 'em Pumpkin to Talk About

What a perfect pumpkin pun, thanks to Pinterest!

I was rather pleased with my previous lightbox message, because I "thunk" it up all by myself!

"DONT SWEAT THE FALL STUFF."

rubba scrubba??

Well, you know I need to write about CLEANING since I just had to clean two glumps of some unknown substance off my laptop screen so I could see what I was typing! It's bad, I know. And since I am a much better analyzer, list maker, and ponderer than I am a cleaner, I have been making so much progress this summer in internal therapy as to WHY I am such a wretched housekeeper! Is it genetic?? Did my mom just not train me RIGHT?? {sorry, Mom! :)} Am I just plain LAZY?? Should I even try to CHANGE? Or just accept my Mama Bear closets?? And be HAPPY that Daniel and I spend way too much time hunting for our stuff among our stuff??

I am too much of a perfectionist to accept the myth that I can't improve my habits, and put my life back together like a magazine picture! {As if it ever was?!} So...... I have started polling my friends that appear to live like Martha Stewart/Betty Crocker {they tell me they don't, but the drawer under the oven doesn't lie!!} for success tips, etc. to get me on the road to complete, organized bliss. Here are some snitches of what they had to say!

"Make the bed!! Even if it's late in the day, just make it." {Even after making this a New Year's Try-To, I still fail miserably at this one.}
"I like to get dressed and comb my hair before leaving the bedroom."  {Oh dear, no lounging in yoga pants til lunch?!}
"Keep the dishes done."  {Supposedly this tidbit had come at one time from me!!!?? Wow. I went off course.}
"It helps to have enough storage."  {OK, this one makes sense. Trailer house does not = storage!}
"I actually enjoy cleaning." {You DO? Oh....HOW?}
"Try FlyLady's 15 minute Decluttering rule. It really works!!!"  {FlyLady, here I come!}
"You can't have it all. I wish I had all your ideas and creativity. Just be yourself." {Thanks! I feel better already!}
"I don't like to cook, but I love to sew."  {Well, I don't like to sew, but I love to cook....if I don't have to do dishes.}
"I didn't like how rigid my mom was with household rules. We had to put our shoes away immediately and hang things in our closets just so....I hated it. {Thanks, Mom, for being just the way you were!!}
"I don't think we can completely change our natures, but we can each try to improve in areas where we don't shine. {Such wise, sane advice. Maybe I don't need to continue internal therapy, and friend surveys after all.}

FlyLady's Rubba Scrubba
{Mr. Rubba Scrubba}

Anyway, I decided to check out http://www.flylady.net/ to see what she had to offer. Hmmmm.....I signed up for her daily emails that she deems very important, {GULP! 10+ per day?! I guess I will be so organized I will have time to read piles of emails!} but I am not completely convinced that I should become a "FlyBaby" and go "fluttering" around! I also draw the line at wearing lace up shoes in the house!! That being said, I did enjoy her tip of grabbing a trashbag and walking around the house throwing aways 27 things. Love the randomness of the number 27! It was actually harder than I thought it would be, but then it would be hard for a hoarder to throw away 27 things....Her next command was to give away 27 things. This was actually easier for some odd reason... Both activities were very good for my constitution! Maybe I should become a fledgling FlyBaby, and go fluttering around swishing and swiping with my Purple Rags, Rubba Scrubba, and Rubba Sweepa! Ummm... Really?? I'm thinking some Sitta Whila while I Reada Booka would be better! Like my favorite poem, "Dust if You Must!" I'm torn. I want to be a relaxed, fun person whose house is always ready for friends to drop by! But, that doesn't happen while you're Deepa Sleepa! What do you think?? Are any of y'all already happily fluttering around as FlyBabies?! Maybe if she didn't call her followers FlyBabies and FlyGuys I would be more excited about this. But then I never have been excited about cleaning! It's much more fun to write about cleaning than to actually clean.

quickly thinking whilst i type...

I like this quote.

In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart. - by John Bunyan

Daniel is bow-hunting.

He has worked all morning on servicing "Rosie the Dozie"  aka bulldozer and the track hoe. It is still too wet to work much to his dismay! I think this is the soggiest winter we have ever experienced. Didn't mind wet winters so much when we had lawn service contracts....but such is life!

I am taking a couch break.

 Because I have gotten out of bed, washed loads of laundry, scrubbed piles of dishes and scummy counter tops, sorted mail, paid bills, made Three Cheese Hamburger Helper, and straightened up the house. After a short sit and a piece of chocolate cake from Aunt Sue that I denied myself of when I was on a "diet day" earlier this week since I am on a "off day" today, I will bound up and vacuum out the car "again" so we can get it parked somewhere for sale, clean out the Yukon, trim my rose bush, dust, clean up the dog area, clean bathrooms, vacuum and mop floors, bag up piles of stuff that I pulled out of closets and drawers in January so I can drop it by the thrift store next week, visit Grandma Schneider, go to folk's so Dad can help me do a demo of the sound wave science experiment that I want to do Monday, grade some tests, type next week's school schedule, spend some quality time with Danl, and get ready for church at 7:15! Lucky for us, Mel {koehn} sweetly made and gave us some gourmet potatoes and pork loin that will be a scrumptious meal for us tonight! Such a blessing to have dear friends.... And meanwhile I need to be pondering on how/what we should do to celebrate Florida's birthday at school on Monday!

Anyone want to bring freezers of homemade key lime ice cream?! :)

Any ideas on how to actually accomplish all that stuff I just listed out?! Knowing how to prioritize would be amazing...it ALL seems important to me....but I fail miserably at being Superwoman. Sometimes I just know I am one step from the loony bin! You know what I did Thursday?! I had gone to Pensacola for allergy shots and was supposed to meet Daniel and David at Sake for supper. So I pull in and wait and wait and wait on them, and finally almost 15 minutes or so later, I realize that I am sitting in the parking lot of Tuscan Pizza Oven!!! Not Sake! SO DUMB!!! Then I meekly pulled out, and proceeded to go next door to Sake where they were waiting for and laughing at me! See? There's no hope for this scatterbrained redhead!!

this quote

I am trying desperately to embrace this truth. I tend to think that having a larger house {with bounteous cabinets, closets, and carports} would play a quintessential part of my happiness. But it wouldn't. Truly.

“To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness."

Love to people-watch? Try HONY!

   Sometimes, even though you should be doing things like cleaning out the freezer, tidying up the kitchen, or brooming up the grassy floor, you just have to relax and do some therapeutic people-watching via the wonderful web. Humans of New York is the perfect place to do this! Back in 2010, a guy named Brandon started meandering around New York City snapping photos {with permission} and asking questions. Then he posts the quotes, comments, and photos he has gathered. He even made a book that I would love to add to my library. Check it out!  http://www.humansofnewyork.com/

People are so intriguing..... The pic below was new today...looks pretty chilly up in NYC!
I kept yelling their names, trying to get them to look my way.
He said, "That won't work. You have to howl at them."

Here the "About" from HONY.
My name is Brandon and I began Humans of New York in the summer of 2010. HONY resulted from an idea that I had to construct a photographic census of New York City. I thought it would be really cool to create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants, so I set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map. I worked for several months with this goal in mind. But somewhere along the way, HONY began to take on a much different character. I started collecting quotes and short stories from the people I met, and began including these snippets alongside the photographs. Taken together, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog, which over the past two years has gained a large daily following. With nearly one million collective followers on Facebook and Tumblr, HONY now provides a worldwide audience with glimpses into the lives of strangers in New York City.

Tell me in the comments if HONY is your style!

Someone is praying for the things....

http://www.sevenly.org/Thanksgiving Kids Craft: Thankful Pie Spinner
Too many tomorrows have come and gone whilst I whittle my time away doing everything but posting on this blog o' mine!
{THINGS like SARAH PALIN!!!! eating ice cream on CHICKEN potpie, etc!!! More on these episodes later!!}
I patterned a Thanksgiving bulletin from the above quote, and put up the kids' pumpkin pie spinners all around it! Looks quite yummy! I had them color "crust" with brown marker around the edges, so theirs look even more realistic than this Pinterest sample.
Kudos to being thankful!
I am attempting to "go out of my way to give praise" as one of my November Happiness Project resolutions. More on the HP later! :)

happiness project progress!

   School Meeting is now history; good history though! T'was definitely worth it to go! Loved seeing old friends, and making new ones, staying with my kindred spirit, Katelyn, gleaning ideas from the pros, and eating scrummy, southern food! {I want to try to replicate the caramel candy corn ice cream dessert!} Yet overall, I personally feel like the lectures could be de-lengthened, and the buzz sessions could be bountiful-lied...but that's just my feeble opinion!
   Now, back to blogging about this happiness project of mine...I am still "doing" it! But, I haven't given it quite the zeal I had anticipated that I would! Bottom line, happiness comes from lots, and I mean LOTS, of good old-fashioned self denial! I like to think that sitting down, putting my feet up, while reading or browsing will make me the happiest, but no! I am truly happier when I don't give in to what I feel like doing and rather whisk around, do up the dishes, stuff some clutter, and THEN plop on my tush! Also, this happiness project isn't about joy, which I consider to be a stable fruit of having a relationship with my Maker, having the best hubby, having food, clothing, shelter etc, etc! This happiness project is directly related to what I am terming as "surface happiness," or the mood I'm in because of my own day-to-day actions. That said, I have found that it is surprisingly easy to make myself happy! An on the flip side, I've found that it's surprisingly easy to make myself sad, grumpy, or grouchy! Ouch! I'm going to start with sharing my own personal 12 commandments that I created. A few are the same as Gretchen's, but they are mostly mine. {Warning! If you haven't read Gretchen Rubin's book The Happiness Project, this post may not make much sense.}

~12 Commandments~
1. Stop while it's fun.
2. Be the better person.
3. De-escalate the situation.
4. Listen.
5. Be observant.
6. Don't whine.
7. Deny self.
8. Clean up, pick up, put away.
9. Identify the problem.
10. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
11. Say yes to saying no.
12. Be Sharon! :)

Next I'll share the three secrets of adulthood I've discovered!

~Secrets of Adulthood~
No matter how messy the kitchen is, it is possible to get it cleaned up!
If your house is clean and pretty, it won't look shabby.
Candy bars don't taste as good as you think they should.

Here's my true rules...

~True Rules~
When eating out, always order water unless they serve amazing lemonade!
Leather is better.
I'm always busy.
There's so much to learn!

OK, now for July's report which was my first month. I titled this month "Form Healthy Habits." I chose this quote for my inspiration. "Habits are safer than rules; you don't have to watch them. And you don't have to keep them either. They keep you." - Frank Crane
My resolutions were as follows:
God first
Move it!{exercise}
Make the bed
Scan the news
G'morning Kitchen - G'nite House
Blog
Sleep 8
Drink 6
No ruffled feathers
Tackle a nagging task.
Whew!! On my score sheet, I only ever did them all one day. I think I had pretty high hopes for myself! I was super happy and felt like I had it all together though on the days when I got right around and had mostly stars instead of blanks! I'm still trying to keep these things as good habits, but I sure haven't been blogging every day. And, I don't think Daniel would appreciate it if I tried to make the bed while he is still in it some mornings! Lol, "Honey, don't wriggle too much when you get out of bed, I have it all smooth and made up already!"

This is getting quite verbose....I shall wrap it up for now, get some zzzz's, and report on August, September, and October tomorrow!!

finally fall

Finally made a fall bulletin using this quote. I really like how it turned out. I colored the "a"s  orange and the heart red, then put up the ears of corn from Brent and colorful leaves around it. Today was a great day at school! We had our second "Sing-along." We all love having Ms. Roxie teach music!

!!SPARKY!! {or not..}

SPARKY!!!! SPARKy!! SPARky! SPArky. SParky.. Sparky... sparky.... s p a r k y . . . . zzzzzz

That's a word demonstration of how I feel! It seems as if my saturated head is spinning to the point of flinging brain! We teachers of WHCS spent yesterday and today down at PCA in Pensacola soaking up ideas and absorbing techniques while observing the sparky, yet completely structured faculty. We had to arise in the wee morning hours to arrive on time, so by now I'm feeling devastatingly droopy! But I must bustle about and finish my preparations for tomorrow's lessons {no more winging it, Sharon!!!}, do up the supper dishes, cut out my Williamsburg party dress, pay a bill, pack up the chevron and polka dot painted pumpkins I made at Anne's on Saturday, advertise the yard/bake sale on Craigslist, and grade 18 tests before I be-bop to bed! Ouch! That list I just typed looks way too long! And the caffeine from my coconut mocha latte from The Drowsy Poet wore off long ago! Hasta la vista!

P.S. Those caramel snickerdoodles were the bomb!

This is the quote of the week for my class.

"I installed a skylight in my apartment and the people who live above me are furious!"

quotes and more quotes

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."

-Edison, Thomas A.

Those of you who receive the daily Sunday School Readings via email, likely read this quote this morning! I loved it. The quote I chose for our classroom quote of the week is the following one. It's pretty good! Happy Monday, y'all!

"It's amazing how long it takes to complete something you're not working on."

keep calm?!!

This is what I feel like because I am not ready AT ALL for school to start in only 10 days! But we have been having a lovely time with Alisha, Pierre, and the kids. And bottom line, everything that has to get done, WILL.GET.DONE. I think so anyway, or hope so! Eeeek!! It HAS to! Ok, time to stop vacillating between calm and freak mode and just carry on!

i'm back

  Hey. I'm back. And I've been putting off blogging, not because I don't want to write, but because I have too much to write about! I'd much rather expand a piddly bit of news into a lengthy epistle instead of condensing days of lively living into a readable, bloggable portion. So I will endeavor to touch and go on whatever topics flit through my mind!
  The aged phrase, "Don't judge a book by its cover" definitely applies to cupcakes as well! It could be restated as "Don't buy a chocolate cupcake from a Publix bakery just because its towering with chocolate curls and frosting." It. was. NASTY. I'm not kidding. Ask Melanie, she'll agree! Ever since we ate the "thing" masquerading as a cupcake last Saturday, I've been hankering to get in the kitchen and bake the real deal! Danl was gone last Fri. - this Mon to help instruct a firearms class in TN. I missed him. But I tried to keep my mind off my lonesomeness by accomplishing gobs of stuff, socializing, and partying! I went to Anthony and Katie's for banana pudding on Friday, stayed up til one o'clock rearranging the living room, took Mel with me to the beach on Sat, we got clouded out so ended up shopping and reading my old diaries in Starbucks over yummy coffee and that terrible chocolate cupcake, {insert: ancient diaries from my teenage years are appalling!! Help! But they are quite fascinating as well!} had a great supper and evening at Daniel and Anne's, played Foodie Fight with friends, taught Sunday School, dined on Dad's grilled pork chops, stayed up til 1 again finishing the new living room look, {love it!} and finally welcomed Danl home again on Monday! Whew! Then I packed up and left for MS on Tuesday with Priscilla, Mom, and Aunt Donna. {Priscilla gave me a beautiful painting of a black cityscape silhouette again a red sky with two birds on the wire! She is so talented! I adore it.} Talk about taking separate vacations. We aren't having marriage issues I assure you! It just worked out this way! We stopped at the bakery in Livingston for lunch and pie, and a caramel pecan roll, and donuts, and sweet roll twist thingies, and.... :) didn't eat this all at once in case you were wondering! Toured the new mansion Home at Oakwood. It is AMAZING! I know Gramps will love their new suite over there even though it's quite a bit smaller than their cottage. Listened to some couples sing over at the old Home. Aunt Donna and I slept next door at Amanda's house since she was gone. That worked well; I could make all the mess I wanted without getting on Grandma's nerves! We picked out some new snazzy glasses for Grandma in Westpointe. Feasted on a breakfast supper of egg pancakes and home canned sausage, then listened to memories of Kirby, the sweet little 11 year old boy that was killed in a tragic farm accident on Monday...so sad! Had a hearty oatmeal breakfast the next morning. I cut out a dress while we listened to the funeral. Mom grilled fish and shrimp and Uncle Ward's came for lunch. All too soon we were on our way home again! But it's really good to be with my hubby again! And our three dogs. That's a whole 'nother story. Amen.

spending $25

"After all, a vacation is not a matter of place or time. We can take a wonderful vacation in spirit, even though we are obliged to stay at home, if we will only drop our burdens from our minds for a while. But no amount of travel will give us rest and recreation if we carry our work and worries with us."
- Laura Ingalls Wilder, essay September 1919

Love this quote! It was today's "Moment of Happiness" email from Gretchen Rubin. I'm a fan of hers; love the daily email quotations and I just purchased both of her books! Happier at Home and The Happiness Project. Both are previously loved editions, gotta go green and buy used books ya know! I am having the best time spending a $25 Visa card I received from one of my students... Trying to stretch it SO FAR..... Also nabbed this splendid hot pink phone cover as my yellow one has suffered a fatal blow from dropping to the pavement from lap one too many times.... Rhonda says PINK does not sound like me, but for some unknown reason, it HAD to be pink this time! Every now and then, my girly streak flares up, I guess! Wonder what I will find to spend my last $.40 on....

the moment

Just live in the moment and enjoy life! Yes, I want to live in the moment, but can it please be a different moment, someone else's moment? My moments are too overwhelming...I'd like a moment without worries, bills, dishes, or laundry looming. I'm tired of being tired. I know this is droll matter to blog about, but this is my moment, my "right now." And it doesn't comfort me to know that my right now moments have been brought about by my very own choices. I shouldn't complain one tiny bit. But I'm too human, too woman, I guess. But at the same time that I am feeling and thinking these drab thoughts, I know deep down in my heart that I am happy and content in spite of it all. "This too shall pass" as my mother always comfortingly quoted. And there are so many others the wide world over that would give years of their lifetime to have but a few of my privileged, blessed moments. Moments filled with true love, real friendship, good food, sins forgiven.

Here's a little list of awesome moments that I experienced today!

Sleeping in until 7:30...BLISSFUL.

Purchasing a colorful, old-fashioned braided rug that was made by hand by Leah, Mrs. Alvin Hiebert from Polly's yard sale. LOVE the turquoise accent it adds in my kitchen.

Basking in the sun {yet still shivering} on the beach with Tanya, Jen, and Mel. THANKFUL for my soft, yellow chevron blanket from Jill.

Devouring a DELICIOUS Key Lime Krispy Kreme donut on the way home.

Talking on the phone with my dad. I have the best FAMILY.

Hearing my HUBBY tell me, "Don't worry 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Figuring out once again that WRITING always makes me feel better about LIFE!

here comes the bride!

We are so super pleased and excited that my bro Anthony will be marrying his sweetheart,
Katelyn Jane Miller, on June 23!!!

She is the sweetest chick, hopefully she'll be able to bear with us. :) We all love her to pieces already. Especially Anthony. lol

I've also signed my contract to continue in the schoolmarm business next year. Only 10 kiddos and 2 grades though. Yay!!!
