Breakfast à la Française

French Hot Chocolate. Classic dark European-style hot chocolate

Today was the day to finally try this recipe which had been hibernating on my Paris Pinterest board ever since I pinned it while gathering ideas for my focus-city themed classroom years ago! Since it is still February, aka "Month of Love & Romance & Chocolate," the timing felt right!  And was it ever decadent! Sadly, I did not have bittersweet chocolate on hand and therefore had to substitute with semisweet and (gulp) even some milk chocolate! But nevertheless, it slid down the hatch very smoothly! I'm sure the copious amounts of whipping cream aided in that department... I sipped it whilst tearing off pieces of a crusty baguette leftover from Joe Pattie's that I warmed in the microwave and then toasted in the toaster oven, and felt ever so French as I enjoyed my very Parisian breakfast. But eventually the conjured images of the Eiffel Tower faded into the reality of the very American Monday that was before me. A Mondayish Monday brim-full of attempting to work from home, continuously feeding my ever-scavenging toddler, gathering groceries in local ole Atmore, laundering our soiled clothing, and preparing grub for growling middles. But looking back, it was a good Monday! Although seeing the City of Light is most definitely on my bucket list, I wouldn't trade my little world in Walnut Hill for anything!
Bonjour!

French Hot Chocolate

The most decadent dark hot chocolate recipe that tastes just like the French hot chocolate found in Paris cafés. Intense, rich, and absolute heaven for any chocolate lover. Recipe based off of the famous Café Angelina in Paris.
YIELD: 2 large, intense cups or 4 smaller ones

PREP TIME: 3 minutes

COOK TIME: 5 minutes

TOTAL TIME: 8 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder (optional, but delicious for intensifying chocolate flavor)
  • 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, at least 70%, chopped*
  • Giant bowl of whipped cream, for serving

Directions:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the whole milk, heavy cream, powdered sugar, and espresso powder until small bubbles appear around the edges. Do not allow the mixture to boil.
  2. Remove from saucepan from the heat and stir in the chopped chocolate until melted, returning the sauce to low heat if needed for the chocolate to melt completely. Serve warm, topped with lots of whipped cream.

The Best of 2017!

Happy 2018!
We bring to you the Best of our 2017 backwards!
I started this epistle long ago and realized that if I continued each month as I had done December; it would need to be a leather-bound bookshelf edition! So I chose to follow the advice of my sage stepfather, "It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be DONE." Therefore, I selected ONE "best" event for all of the following months! This does NOT mean it was the only good thing that happened each month; it was just the event I felt to elaborate upon! In typing this, I inadvertently ended up reading through my entire daily dairy, and came to the resounding conclusion that we are so blessed! God has been beyond good to us, and we have so much to be thankful for! I know that sounds trite, but it is the truth! Daniel has had an amazing, albeit busy year as Faircloth Land Services has expanded. I have enjoyed so many daily normal days with Danielle and in the office at Schneider Farm Fence. We both love what we do and we love our little girl and our two furkids! And we love you, our family and friends!
May 2018 bring you PEACE, LOVE, & JOY.

The Best of DECEMBER....

Hearing Danielle say "Baby Jethusth" with her sweet little lisp... She played and played with her Little People nativity set. Various toys including her precious ScoobyDoo ornament from Nana got to sit in the stable next to the manger.

Date night in Pensacola eating at Outback and Christmas shopping for Danielle at Toy R Us and Academy... Daniel sure knows how to spoil his girls!

SNOW in FLORIDA! Daniel and I stayed up most of the night watching it magically flutter to the ground and coat everything in sugary whiteness. Danl woke us up around 6:30 and we bundled up to explore and play and take in our rare snow day! It truly felt as if someone had changed out our normal brown world for someone else's glittery white one! We threw snowballs, Danielle and I built a snowman family, and I made one snow angel and the hugest snowball ever which amazingly lasted for days; one ever-melting reminder that our now brown-again world truly had been whirl of white!

perfect winter day is probaly going sledding with my friends then going inside and drinking hot chocolate

Cuddling in the cozy glow of our fake flames...blankets and pillows piled around! This little heater from Lowe's has been the best Cyber Monday purchase ever!
Duraflame 5200-BTU Infrared Compact Personal Electric Space Heater with Thermostat

Christmas in Callaway with Alex, Ashton, and Paxton! "Fantasy in Lights" is always so fun and festive, but taking our friends and Danielle through for their first time was the best ever! Afterwards, Danielle and I delightedly devoured the hugest donut we have ever seen! Then we winded our way through the back roads to end up at the mansion of a Marriot we had booked online. Wow. Let's just say we don't always stay at golf resorts, but when we do, we stay at the Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel & Conference Center at Grand National.

Oysters with my family on the 25th! After attacking Mt. Giftmore, we had an absolute feast of the sea! Raw oysters, Cajun baked oysters, crabcakes, hushpuppies, fried trigger fish, cheese grits, coleslaw, baked beans, 3 Musketeers chocolate mousse dessert and assorted goodies!

Oysters Huur de Oesterkoning. I have tried several exotic foods, but only this year had the desire to try Oysters. They were great!

Family time in Guntersville! Five grandkids age 3 and under made for some amazing times! And of course we had another Mt. Giftmore!

The Best of NOVEMBER....

Getting a new but old-fashioned style coil-spring mattress from our local Mattress Depot and topping it with a 7 zone memory foam topper from JCP!

Make It a December to Remember

Wednesday Words of Wisdom – December 4, 2013 | thesassylife

Happy December!
The Christmas Season began yesterday for me. Since we were ill over Thanksgiving and just now are feeling mostly back to normal, it felt like those days were like Black Week instead of Black Friday! The experience of having our whole little household all under the weather at once left me completely undone physically and emotionally! Normal, daily life and health are more precious than ever now...

Of overseas adventures, our wedding, birthdays, Christmas and NYE! So much to look forward to in a single month.

This pics are the ones that inspired me for my December avatars and yesterdays status...I love WhatsApp statuses and the connectivity and impromptu chats that result with my friends and family, but sometimes I get irked at myself, because posting current statuses squelches my need and desire to blog! And the bad thing about that is, WhatsApp statuses are fleeting and soon gone, while blogging is a forever diary!

Get ready for the holidays at AnniesCatalog.com!

I haven't put out any Christmas decor yet... and my cinema box still says,
#BLESSED
#GRATEFUL
I💚AUTUMN

I did get out Danielle's Melissa & Doug snowman stacker and her Little People Nativity yesterday evening. She has been so enraptured with both since she hasn't played with them since last Christmas.

This Nativity is adorable! When you press down on the angel, the star lights up and it sings Away in a Manger.

Well, even though I have so much more I could and would like to write, I have wedding cake to make! Suzanna Hiebert & Reuben Koehn will tie their knot tomorrow...and I wish very badly to witness their vows while wearing a new emerald frock.
That means I must become a Desperate Seamstress before the day is over too!

A Day in the Life of Danielle

Another month has already flown by since I penned (aka pecked) the D-Day post about Danielle, and more or less promised to do another like it when the 20th rolled around again! But I didn't want to. It seemed redundant. She hasn't grown or changed all that much, and it just didn't feel right when I copied and pasted that checklist in my new post box to fill out this month. So instead I'll just write about today...it was one of those just really good days when the sun shines, and the birds sing, and everything mostly stayed in its proper orbit!
Little Princess actually snoozed until 7:30! Usually she's up and chirping around 6:30! Then she has milk, which I admit to warming 28 seconds. Immediately after guzzling that, she MUST have her paci shoved back in her little pie-hole and pink "lovey" clutched securely while she decides that she it's OK to visit with and maybe kiss her parents. Sometimes she's too lazy for real kisses and just puts her paci to our lips lol!
Back to today, I have had no babysitters this week due to my sissies frolicking and rollicking around on vacay! So it was another day to buckle down and work from home as much as possible! After the house finally warmed up a little, and we had finished our pumpkin mug cake, Danielle took a shower with me, (this is epic! She darts about the shower, washing her hair and body, scrubbing the walls with a little brush, and props up her legs to shave just like mommy!) read books, vacuumed, (I wish kid's vacuums really sucked up dirt!) begged for chocolate, sat on the pot and read her Bible (Biba) for awhile with no results, tried to help me type, and all in all, entertained herself quite admirably until noon! I decided we both needed to get out of the house to enjoy the fall weather we at last have been blessed with!

We made our way to McDonald's for a bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle, (Breakfast All Day? I'm Lovin' It!!!) crispy hashbrown, fruit 'n yogurt parfait, bold & robust McCafe Americano with whipped cream, and a Happy Meal of chicken nuggets, fries, strawberry go-gurt, and apple juice! We sat in the sun (which Danielle insisted was the "moom" - she is still learning the differences of the heavenly bodies) on the steps of the Tom Byrne park gazebo, and ate our lovely lunch while watching two older guys play tennis. I hoped they couldn't hear that Danielle was imitating their grunting and groaning remarkably well! Next it was finally time for the great STINKS, STINKS! After getting that episode over with, we visited with some friends that had also decided the park was the place for lunch, before playing on the slides and swings. Only one faceplant into the mulch went on the accident report! Next stop was the Mattress Depot, where Danielle was most dubious of her mother laying down on various mattresses. I think she thought we had to take a nap in that strange place, and she was not pleased! I was most pleased with the king-sized, gel-topped foam mattress that will be delivered on Monday! Don't ask how long we have had our current mattress, or how old it is!!! Right as we bumped on to Garrett Road, Danielle slipped into la la land...and stayed there as I untied her shoes and tugged off her leggings and laid her in her crib where she napped for two happy hours!
I tidied and typed, house and estimate respectively. Danielle woke up just in time to help me cook supper! She dutifully dumped the bag of onions so all those lovely little skin pieces could float about the kitchen before she set the table. Aka ALL the silverware from the drawer piece by piece! Meanwhile I was feeling like Jacob and Esau while I prepped a savory venison stew to go in the ForevaPot. I always think of that Biblical birthright meal when I make venison stew! I also cooked rice, as I have found out that Daniel actually can endure such a soup if I serve his over rice! And I baked some apples with my new favorite caramel baked apple recipe from Katie! Daniel arrived before the supper was ready to be served, so he and his little pig-tailed partner murdered some chips and salsa. Danielle was even sporting salsa on her forehead and in her hair! Then Danl wanted to split some red oak into firewood before the night fell, so we were an attentive audience of two, even hindering production by trying our hand with the maul for several swings. Let's just say we have no doubts about the weaker vessel(s) at our house! After supper, Daniel laid down to relax on the couch and soon began snoring what sounded like DO NOT DISTURBzzzzzz, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCESzzzzzz, so we kissed Daddy goodnight, skipped bath due to morning shower, brushed teeth, read a most fascinating Berenstain Bears book that even had a helli (helicopter) in it, prayed her little bedtime prayer of "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep...," and rocked and sang Jesus Loves Me, Jesus Loves the Little Children, Red River Valley, You Are My Sunshine, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mama's Gonna Give You a Mockingbird, and since it is always so soothing and fitting no matter the season, Silent Night, Holy Night.
Good night.

THE BEST PUMPKIN MUG CAKE

(with my changes)

INGREDIENTS:

6 tablespoons yellow cake mix
  • 2 tablespoons canned pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • whipped cream, for topping

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a large mug, whisk (with a small whisk or large fork) together the cake mix, pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, milk, and vegetable oil. Whisk until smooth.
  2. Cook in the microwave on high for 1 minute. Top with piles of whipped cream!

Baked Caramel Apples

8 Macintosh apples, peeled and cut in half
2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup real salted butter

Put apples in a 9x13 pan. Mix sugar and flour. Sprinkle over apples and dot with butter. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 - 40 minutes.
(Don't worry that it looks dry! The apples will juice out, the sugar will syrup, and the butter will melt, turning it all into the most amazing mixture!)

Outside my Rain-spattered Window...

Outside my window... the last drops of rain are slowing slipping down. I was gonna get out and go to church tonight but with no carport or garage; the current deluge "rained" me in!
I am thinking....that it's really hard to know what to do sometimes when both options feel "right" and either choice will make one person happy and the other one sad.
I am thankful...that Danielle loves to eat! There's just something so satisfying about feeding a child. We had Socio's "deetda" with a friend in Pace for lunch today after checking on one of Daniel's jobs. It is truly the best pizza ever! We say this every time we eat it!
In the kitchen... sits a cast iron Dutch oven of boiled peanuts. They turn blackish/purplish from the iron and are just plain good! Try it!
I am wearing... BLACK! BTW, is black a color? Or the absence of color? Either way, I love it.
I am creating...a new hot pink and black lumberjack plaid dress in my mind. Hopefully in reality tomorrow. Or wait; make that later today. It's 12:37 AM.
I am going...to blog more! I've never missed or remembered that work I didn't get done or the zzzz's I didn't z when I chose to write instead! I decided to use this format again tonight because when I haven't written in a while, I feel overwhelmed by all the things I've missed touching on, and this style helps me condense it and feel "current."
I am reading.... Spark JOY by Marie Kondo. I need this woman to come to my house! ASAP. And I'm marathon-reading a new friend's awesome blog!

Image result for great minds inspire others
I am hoping...to sleep double. This is something I wish often was possible! To get the benefits of 2 hours of sleep for every hour slept lol.
I am looking forward to...taking Danielle to a pumpkin patch. I will let her choose her own pumpkin even if it's really ugly.
I am learning...to accept myself. To be myself, but be my best self.
Around the house....things, stuff, clutter, is drowning us! You wouldn't know that I've been slowly KonMaring for a month now...you wouldn't know it, but I do. I've actually, amazingly taken several loads to WeCare and I can breathe just a wee bit better now. A tiny bit of negative energy from things that don't spark joy has flown away! YAY!
One of my favorite things.... is also one of my worst habits! STAYING UP instead sleeping like normal people do.  I mean I do go to bed when Daniel does, but I get back up! And relish the perfect silence of solitude, and read, and putter, and mutter, and tidy up, and eat, and think, and dream, and have my devotions, and write in my 5 year diary, and Danielle's 5 year diary, and my devotion journal, and sometimes like tonight, I blog.

She has been and will continue to be our greatest adventure!
